Interview with Elizabeth Coldwell – Editor and Author

What is the title of your latest book with Xcite?    Wild Rides

When and why did you first start writing erotica?

When I worked on Forum, the then editor set herself and the rest of the editorial team the task of writing an erotic story. I was the only one of us to finish mine, and I enjoyed writing it so much I’ve never looked back since.

Where do you find your inspiration for your stories?

Everywhere! Dreams, scraps of conversation, places I visit, news stories… For some reason I tend to get a lot of my best ideas as I’m drifting off to sleep. Fortunately, I can always remember them in the morning.

Do you write in other genres? If so – what are is your most popular or latest book?

I’d like to – the first novel I ever had published, back in 1992, was a supernatural tale, not in the least erotic – but I really don’t have the time these days.

Do you have any other jobs as well as writing?

Editor for Xcite Books.

How do your friends and family feel about you writing erotica?

They’re completely relaxed about it – though I did once raise the eyebrows of a male friend by telling him I had a story in a collection called ‘I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus’…

How do you enjoy reading erotica? Are you a paperback, ebook or audio book lover?

I’m still a paperback girl – I read some books on my netbook, usually for review purposes, but I prefer the physical experience of handling a book.

Ebooks have made a big impact in the last few years and it has now become very easy for authors to self-publish. Why do you prefer to be published by Xcite Books?

I know my work’s going to be thorougly edited and have the professional feel which is lacking from many self-published books. People like the idea of making a lot of money through self-publishing, but if they want to be taken seriously that way, they really need to consider getting the book edited and having a decent cover design, rather than run the risk of appearing amateurish.

What do you feel has been your greatest achievement to date?

Getting that first novel published. Nothing matches the feeling of picking up something with your name emblazoned on the cover for the very first time.

What keeps you awake at night?

My cats, deciding they want to settle on me for a good sleep of their own…

Where is your dream holiday destination? Have you been there yet?

I love Amsterdam, and I’ve been there numerous times. It’s been the setting for a number of short stories, as well as my m/m novella, ‘Stud To Go’, because I never fail to get inspired by something when I’m over there.

In what television show would you most like to be a cast member? Why?

The original ‘CSI’. I love the idea of solving crimes in Las Vegas while strutting around looking fabulous in a low-cut vest top…

What is your favourite food or recipe?

I love to bake – I make a mean cranberry and nut brownie, and my Yorkshire parkin’s not bad, either.
